Why is he not enshrined as a great southern author? The only reason that I can come up with is the arrival of F Scott Fitzgerald onto the scene, sort of an eclipse of a genius by an even more geniussy genius. But Cobb, wow, what a story. Do yourself a favor and google him. In the post war years (WWI, that is) he was the most famous living writer and instantly recognizable. I would characterize his stories as a cross between Mark Twain and Somerset Maugham, eight parts downhome, two parts bizarre. One story about a faded Confederate family of aristocrats (The Family Tree) stands up to the best of Tennessee Williams, and he had a knack for the O. Henry type twist at the end. Some of his vernacular takes a bit of effort on the reader's part, and some of his depictions of black are ante-diluvian at best, but his heros, whether black or white, are always a little smarter and a few steps ahead of the rest. If you like Jane Austen, these stories are similar but more accessible. The guy was, like Twain, a natural story teller. Four stars, and if there was anything else in print with his name on it, I'd buy it.Product details
