Eight days to planetfall, and I'm being transferred to Gunner. My tentacles slime in disgust.
Or is it fear?
If this is the last planet we ever conquer, I'll be glad. Be nice to settle down somewhere, get off this ship, own a square of land, learn to love all that open sky.
Eight more days before planetfall. Eight days before we reach planet Earth.

This story has a unique and insightful point of view. We get to experience an alien invasion from the alien’s side. I enjoyed the relationship between Hyt and Kur. Their interactions are hilarious. The themes that run through the story are universal, no matter what the species.I had an epiphany while reading this story. It allowed me to put into words something that I hadn’t realized as to why I enjoy certain stories more than others. There is a point within the story where Hyt is taking in his surroundings. Things clicked into place for me as a reader just a moment before I knew they would click into place for him. The author did not tell me what was happening, he allowed me to come to a realization in real time with the main character. I know it sounds cheesy, but at that moment, the character and I were connected – we were one. That is extremely fulfilling.
****************************SPOILER ALERT*******************************
I felt the story fell short in a couple of places. I did not feel the hate that Hyt had for his own life. Dissatisfied, yes, but not hatred. I also did not feel the love that he had for Mil. These elements could have been left out and not have had an impact on the overall story. As it stands, it should have been better supported by details to be believable.
All in all, it was a great story. I really enjoyed reading it.

Second Suicide A Short Story Single eBook Hugh Howey Reviews
I enjoyed this short sci-fi tale quite a bit. This author's style of writing never gets old. This story takes the reader into the mind of an alien race that knows only conquering and immortality. Oddly enough, this alien race seems eerily humanistic with many emotions. With Earth as their next target, will this warlike race finally have met their match? You have to read to find out.
I read this book back to back with the authors other short story Glitch. I found myself once again astounded at the content packed into this short read.
The books plot and character develpment is very impressive. Howey manages to imerse us into an alien culture and mindset in no time. This allows for a very full narative that tells a intriguing storyline that had me chuckling away at times.
Amazing how much Howey is able to fit into this short story. Great characters, the lead is well developed and interesting, a good amount of humor and an ending on par with any thing M.Night Shyamalan would be proud to come up with. On the humor, this is dead on for brotherly love among soldiers and fit perfectly with the story.
Highly recommended, pick it up, you will not regret it.
All of Hugh Howey's books are on unlimited, If you have not read any, that makes it worth the cost of joining in my opinion. I purchased most of the books before they launched unlimited and so only the last couple have I read using my unlimited account. I meant to read this one that way but accidentally hit the Purchase with One Click Button instead. I know I could of gotten a refund but it wasn't that big a deal. Hugh Howey is my favorite author right now and this short story is one of my favorites outside of WOOL. It was well worth the purchase price. Read it, then read the rest of his books.
Inspired by the movie Edge of Tomorrow, Second Suicide brings us a completely different view of the invasion of Earth... from the viewpoint of the aliens. Due to the actions of a crew member based on a different ship, someone from Intel gets moved to a Gunner position. Curious as to why someone would commit suicide twice (it costs a pretty penny to just off yourself and grab one of the pre-grown bodies in the ship's vats. Why did she do it? Hugh Howey invites us to join along as a double suicide mystery grows with every passing second... and the countdown is on to Earthfall.
Hugh Howey is a modern master of the short story and Second Suicide follows his previous successes in fine fashion. In this story, we learn about the impending invasion of Earth, told from the aliens' perspective. There are definite hints at Howey's love for Tom Cruise's movie "Edge of Tomorrow" in this story, but with more than enough to set it aside as its own tale. In spite of the "alien-ness" of the aliens in question, Howey puts the reader in their shoes...eh...tentacles, as he amps up the tension before the pending invasion.
A couple of weeks before the release of this short story, Hugh told all his Facebook followers to go see Edge of Tomorrow at the cinema. He thoroughly enjoyed it, and it's evident here. Both are alien invasion stories, both take on the subject on resuming life after death. Hugh's take is an interesting one, as the invasion (or rather, its preparation) of Earth is viewed from the perspective of the alien invader.
I really liked this one. In just a few pages, Hugh builds quite a few characters and tells the story (and backstory) of an interesting species. Unlike Edge of Tomorrow, Second Suicide even has an ending that makes sense.
